An increasing number of reported leaks with OPD valves on consumer cylinders has necessitated a code change to NFPA 58, effective January 2020.

A visual inspection of the cylinder valve face seal before filling the cylinder is now required to help identify defects. These seals are not replaceable and therefore if found to be defective, the cylinder must not be filled and must either be replaced by a qualified professional or the cylinder be removed from service.
